University of Texas Football Spring Game

Tuesday, April 5, 2011 | 0 comments

I had to watch the University of Texas Srping Football Game this past weekend.  Being a UT Alum and diehard Longhorn, I was thrilled to see that ESPN aired the game live!

I thought they really did not focus a whole lot on the game.  They seemed to use it has a big long promo for the new Longhorn Network, the 24-hour TV setup between the school and ESPN (which essentially kept UT from jumping ship in the Big 12 - all the Big 12 Schools can start thanking us and ESPN anytime).  I really miss Austin and going to UT football games.  I lived in Austin for 8 years and then moved to Uvalde, Texas for a couple more.  I had season tickets that whole time and missed only 2 or 3 home games during that time.  UT Football games are an event.

Anyway, It was fun seeing Bevo (The UT Mascot and a live Steer) and Big Bertha (a huge drum) on the sidelines once again.  It really made me want to move back to Texas even sooner!
My early take on My Longhorn Football team and its prospects for the 2011 season.  First off, Texas head coach Mack Brown cleaned house after a dismal 5-7 season.  He got rid of several assistant coaches and is starting with alot of new faces on the staff.  Brown has won almost 80% of his games while at UT, which is pretty good at most schools.  The problem is that UT fans expect a 10 win season every year.  So this was a major setback.

The Big question for UT this year may be at quarterback. Texas’ incumbent Garrett Gilbert started last season rather poorly but he came around and was playing pretty good at the end of the season.  I am not sure that "Pretty Good" is going to cut it at Texas though.  Three other QB’s are trying to unseat Gilbert – the most recognizable name of those being former Longhorn QB great Colt McCoy’s little brother, Case.
You could make a case for Case based on his play Sunday…Case McCoy threw for 124 yards and a TD primarily working with the second-team offense against the first-team defense.  I would almost think that Case has the upper hand right now.  There are still many fans who do not want to see Gilbert be the starting QB after last season.  If Case continues to look good, Brown may have a quarterback controversy on his hands.

New co-offensive coordinator and QB coach Bryan Harsin showed off some of his Boise State experience in the playcalling during the game as he threw in a couple of nifty trick plays, but it is going to take a whole lot more than trick plays to turn UT Football around and get it back on the winning track.  They have alot of work ahead of them.
